Previously only available as a low-resolution download, 2007’s Golden Opportunities Mixtape is the release that kicked off Okkervil River’s beloved Golden Opportunities covers series, given a rich new vinyl re-master by original mastering engineer Erik Wofford. Recorded along the epic international tour for Okkervil River’s The Stage Names, Golden Opportunities represents a kind of alternate take on that album’s themes of celebrity, illusion vs reality, and the artists’ life, told through other people’s words rather than Will Sheff’s this time. Running and gunning from city to city, the road-weary band offers their takes on songs made famous by Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, John Cale, Randy Newman, Serge Gainsbourg (who is given a new English-language translation by Sheff) and more.
